Lib Dems support NASH campaign

December 8, 2009 10:00 AM

Campaigners from No Amesbury ShedHenge (NASH) are calling for a stop to plans to build 2 large sheds on Solstice Park. On 22nd September, Wiltshire Council gave the go ahead to the plans, which will lead to a predicted 3,900 HGV and other vehicle movements daily. The site will serve as a Regional Distribution Centre, but with the site located just 125m from local homes, residents are concerned about the impact which it will have on their lives.

Local resident, Sue Lewis, is leading the protests. She voiced these concerns, stating "noise, traffic and lighting pollution will be continuous 24/7." Others have pointed to the worrying size of the site, which will equal that of Heathrow Terminal 5.

NASH is particularly concerned with the impact the development will have on local roads, in an area which is so close to Stonehenge. The A303 is a busy road most weekends, and the new developments could cause it to become gridlocked, leaving traffic to use local towns and villages as an alternative route.

Prospective Lib Dem MP for Salisbury Constituency, Nick Radford is backing the campaign. "This land could be used for highly skilled blue-chip industries. These would have a fraction of the impact on the Amesbury community while providing real employment opportunities. I have written to the Secretary of State, John Denham to change his decision and call in this application in. I would urge you to do the same."
